How to Buy, Sharpen and Maintain Kitchen Knives
Kitchen knives are dangerous when they're dull. The blade can
slip off what ever it is you're trying to cut and the knife can
cause real damage to you. I think it’s important to know
how to be a great knife sharpener, but also how to shop for knives
and maintain them. In this knife video I’ll show you the
keys to kitchen knives.
When you go to the store to shop for kitchen knives, make sure
you get a look at everything that the store has too offer. The
best way to do this in my opinion is to spend some time at a good
kitchen store – not to say you can’t get a great knife
at a big department store, just that kitchen stores can be very
educational.
Make sure you hold the knife you want to buy. Make sure the knives
feel good in your hand and are properly weighted. Whether it’s
a chef’s knife, a paring knife or a fillet knife, if it
doesn’t feel like you’ve got good control, you probably
don’t.
There are now many brands on the market and a wide variety of
prices for knives. Forged and stamped blades are two different
types. There are also different types of handles and rivets. Each
difference impacts the price and quality of any knife.
In this video I’ll also show you how to hone your knives
to keep the edge aligned. I’ll show you the difference between
sharpening a knife and using a honing tool to keep burs off of
the knife edge.
