DEAR RITA: Granola recipes are often hard to follow - some of them have so many ingredients. One of the simple store bought granola recipes I've found is from a discount warehouse store like Sam's. There granola recipe is basic, but even at a discount, the granola is expensive. I also really like nuts in granola recipes - what kinds should I include? Do you have a granola recipe that's easy and affordable - and of course, a granola recipe that tastes great! Thanks - Sally
RITA: First, the nuts used in granola recipes that you buy at the store most usually use almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds or sesame seeds (just a little of those). Their granola recipes come without fruit, but they also have varieties with raisins and dried cranberries. Try this granola recipe.
Now I know it won't be as sweet as store bought granola and its more like a cereal in texture but it is very good. Adjust this granola recipe to your own taste after you make it the first time, adding more honey, maple syrup, vanilla, etc. until you get it just the way you like it.
Granola Recipe like the warehouse clubs
4 cups old fashioned rolled oats
3 cups mixed nuts and seeds
2 cups dried fruit
2/3 cup honey
1/3 cup real maple syrup
1/4 cup light olive oil or Canola (I would probably use Canola but their
label states olive)
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
Preheat oven to 325.
Combine oats, nuts, and seeds. Set aside.
Granola Recipe Directions: In pan, combine honey, maple syrup, oil, vanilla
and salt. Stir over low until salt is dissolved. Pour over oat mixture and
coat evenly. Spread onto sprayed baking sheets in single layer. Bake about
25 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes or so. Remove from oven - it will be
light golden but won't seem real crisp. Stir in dried fruit. It crisps up
as it cools. Store tightly covered in cool pantry or refrigerator for several
weeks.
